About Jose Scarpa Carniello, M.D.
Dr. Scarpa Carniello is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and cytopathology and is specialized in surgical pathology and cytopathology. He completed his anatomical and clinical pathology residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, NY, followed by a surgical pathology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a cytopathology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY. As a cytopathologist, his expertise is the examination of exfoliative cytology and material obtained from fine needle aspiration specimens. He is also an expert in the performance of fine needle aspirations both ultrasound-guided and by palpation. He is engaged in teaching medical students, fellows and residents and his areas of interest include surgical pathology, cytopathology, intraoperative (frozen) consultation, cancer molecular pathology and use of new concepts of molecular and targeted therapy in surgical and cytopathology specimens for the improvement of the patient care.
Dr. Scarpa Carniello completed his medical education in 2011 at Santa Casa of Sao Paulo Medical School in São Paulo, Brazil where he received his medical degree (M.D). Prior to beginning his residency, he participated in a Breast Molecular Pathology post graduate research fellowship at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Carniello then completed his AP/CP residency at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center. Following the completion of his residency, he completed his surgical pathology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a cytopathology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he performed over 300 US-guided and palpation-guided fine needle aspirations (FNA).
