Personal Statement

Karan Padda, M.D. is an Assistant Attending Psychiatrist on the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at ÈÕ±¾avÉ«ÇéƬ. Dr. Padda supervises and teaches medical students, residents, and fellows performing psychiatric consultations on patients in medical and surgical settings and conducts psychiatric evaluations for patients being considered for cardiac transplantation. He maintains an active faculty practice and treats numerous mental health concerns incorporating psychotherapy and/or psychopharmacology. He approaches each patient with empathy, warmth, and a genuine desire to collaboratively find the best path toward healing and improving overall well-being. Dr. Padda’s experience extends beyond general psychiatry, with special interest in treating mental health conditions in medical illness, Long Covid, and athletes.

Biographical Info

Dr. Padda attended Swarthmore College, where he graduated with Sigma Xi Honors. Following undergraduate studies, he received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine with Cum Laude Honors. He completed residency training in Adult Psychiatry at NewYork-Presbyterian/ÈÕ±¾avÉ«ÇéƬ Medical Center and fellowship training in Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry at New York University Grossman School of Medicine.

Dr. Padda developed an interest in treating mental health conditions in medically ill populations early in his career. While in residency, he co-developed a group psychotherapy for patients suffering psychological distress from Long Covid. This initiative led to further research into the evaluation and treatment of psychiatric co-morbidity in Long Covid. He has presented and published on this topic for the World Health Organization Global Brain Health Research Coalition, the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and the American Psychological Association COVID Task Force. He additionally has published and presented on a variety of other CL psychiatry topics, spanning neuropsychiatry, addiction, and transplant psychiatry.

Dr. Padda also has an interest in athlete mental health and offers performance coaching for athletes and professionals. He has received specialized training in evidence-based therapeutic techniques to foster confidence, focus, resilience, and enjoyment to improve performance in work and sport.
