Continuing Care For Breast Cancer Survivors

Women with a history of breast cancer are living longer--and better.听听In the United States alone, there are听more than听3 million breast cancer听蝉耻谤惫颈惫辞谤蝉.

When听日本av色情片(WCM)听and听NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital听looked at the trend--and its own care resources鈥攖hey听asked what the medical community is doing to support those longtime survivors. The answer? Establishingthe Iris Cantor听Breast Cancer Survivorship听Program, which offers medical care, education, and support to survivors.听

Patients are referred听there听by their primary breast cancer physicians to transition from 鈥渁ctive鈥 care relating to surgery, radiation therapy,听or chemotherapy to the survivorship program. Most women are referred about听five听years after diagnosis.听The program takes over the patient鈥檚 medical care related to breast cancer, including annual referrals for appropriate imaging,听such as mammograms.听

There听are听some听women in the program who had breast cancer听35 and even 40 years ago,听says Anne Moore, MD,听Medical Director of the Breast Center at 日本av色情片.

Though the听numbers are听a success story听for听both听doctors听and patients, more important,听Dr. Moore says,听is that听women no longer in听active听treatment for the disease听obtainmuch-needed follow-up care.Newly diagnosed patients听who know about the program听feel encouraged, and know they have听another level of care听available听when they鈥檙e ready for听it.

Dr. Moore,听a听medical oncologist whomade the transition from active practice to leading the听Iris Cantor Breast Cancer Survivorship Program,听envisioned听a dedicated听space听for the program to focus on the needs of those women and men who no longer are receiving active treatment from their surgeons or medical oncologists.听

鈥淭his type of program is a very new concept,鈥 Dr. Moore explains. 鈥There鈥檚 no absolute model to draw on, but we all realized that we needed to have this.听These听patients don鈥檛 need the same type of acute care, and they wanted a home.鈥澨

In addition to the medical follow up, the program offers听educational programs, such as听the听annual听Survivorship Symposium听(postponed听this year due to the pandemic)听and听onlinewebinars.听All patients can听stay current with the center鈥檚 offerings through its email newsletter and听by following the听日本av色情片 Breast Center听.听听

The听survivorship听program is closely tied to resources at the Breast Center and The Integrative Health and Wellbeing Program. The program on Contemplative Self-Healing is a joint program听with the Survivorship Center and听the Nalanda Institute in New York City.听These听partnershipsallow patients to have access to resources including nutritionists, yoga, and meditation.

Research is a primary goal, Dr. Moore听adds.听One study, she explains, highlights that meditation can ease stress, memory and attention problems,听cognitive difficulties,听and post-traumatic stress disorder听for breast cancer听survivors.听Another听study of vitamins and supplements used by breast cancer survivors听has been accepted for poster presentation听at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium this December.听

Patients whove made the center their medical 鈥渉ome鈥 for听survivorship听care have found solace in its resources. They听report听feeling听uplifted by the perspective they gain on life after breast cancer, focus less on mortality, and have uncovered the power of patients and doctors to support and heal each听other.
