Patient-Centered Approach in Treating Thymoma
Life at 40 years old was听good for听Amara MacPhee. She鈥檇 lost about 40 pounds, was eating听well, enjoyed spending time outside, and, even with a听产耻蝉测听professional life, was able to carve out time for a听蹿别飞听dance HIIT (high intensity interval training)听肠濒补蝉蝉es听a week.听
鈥淚 had a very active lifestyle between work, seeing friends, and family,鈥 Amara says.听鈥淎t the time听[2016], I was in the best shape of my life.鈥听
Then听Amara听noticed that she was听struggling听during听a听fitness class.听
听鈥淚 had trouble breathing and keeping up, which was unusual for me,鈥 she says. 鈥My breathing was labored.听I was wheezing and had a dry, hacking, uncontrollable cough. Coughing spells seemed to last forever.鈥听听
Check Up with Primary Care
Wanting听to be well for an upcoming, out-of-town wedding,听Amara听went to her primary care physician,听Meredith F. Lash-Dardia, MD, as soon as possible.听
鈥Dr. Lash听heard the wheezing, checked my breathing, and suggested I get an x-ray,鈥 Amara recalls. 鈥溾橳his will be quick,鈥 I thought. 鈥業 will have the x-ray, go back to see Dr. Lash, and maybe receive a breathing treatment and a prescription for an inhaler. Piece of cake.鈥欌听
When Amara returned to Dr. Lash鈥檚 office after the x-ray, Dr. Lash asked where Amara鈥檚 husband, Alex, was. Amara didn鈥檛 understand what was happening, as Dr. Lash showed Amara the x-ray on her phone, using听a pencil to outline an abnormal mass.听
Stunned鈥攁nd still without a definitive diagnosis鈥擜mara underwent an emergency CT scan听and听blood draws.听
Dr. Lash called听that night听with results.听
Diagnosing the听Thymoma
鈥淭he CT scan showed a听large mass the size of an orange,听or small grapefruit,听wedged between my lungs and ribs,鈥 Amara describes.听听
Dr. Lash scheduled听an appointment听for Amara to see听Nasser Khaled听Altorki, MD, Chief听of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at New York Presbyterian-日本av色情片 Medical Center听and听professor of cardiothoracic surgery.听
Despite听their anxiety about the听appointment with听Dr.听Altorki,听Amara听and her husband felt reassured by the kindness and warmth they experienced at his office.听He听performed a听thorough examination,听then听scheduled a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.听听
鈥淭he staff was also caring and generous in their demeanor during the biopsy,鈥 Amara remembers. 鈥淎nd then I went home and rested, and didn鈥檛 get the results until six days later.鈥听
Thankfully, the mass鈥called听a thymoma鈥攚as benign, but would need to be removed.听Never having experienced more than stitches from dental work, Amara was overwhelmed by the idea of a surgery and a week in the hospital.听But Dr.听Altorki听and his staff听helped Amara and Alex听understand the procedure.听
鈥淭hey repeated themselves multiple times when I didn鈥檛 understand a procedure or what was about to happen,鈥听she says.听
Road to Recovery After Surgery
Although Amara was disoriented and uncomfortable immediately after her surgery, her road to recovery had started with seven days in the hospital. Her post-operative听discomfort听began to incrementally听improve. Amara started听physical therapy, which听included walks on her hospital floor that got听a bit听easier each day.听She found herself relearning the basics.听
鈥淚t was humbling to learn how to do the simplest of听tasks听on my own,鈥 Amara says. 鈥Get out of bed, get dressed, get to the bathroom to brush my teeth and freshen up. Walk again.鈥听
When her first long, post-surgical week was over, Amara went home to rest, recover, and walk when she felt ready. Two weeks later, she went for an x-ray to track her progress and听learned how successful her surgery had been.听
鈥淚 was lucky,鈥 she explains. 鈥淒r.听Altorki听was able to get the entire tumor. It was benign, had not spread, and I didn鈥檛 need any radiation or chemotherapy.鈥听
Her continued recovery included CT scans after another two weeks, at the three-month mark, and each year, along with follow-up appointments with Dr.听Altorki. Four years out, Amara鈥檚 gratitude hasn鈥檛 waned.听
鈥淗ow do you say, 鈥楾hank you,鈥 to everyone involved,鈥 she听asks. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 count the number of doctors, nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, schedulers, radiologists, lab workers,听and听facilities team members I interacted with during that time.听Everyone who helped me was kind, patient, and helpful.鈥澨听
