For many surgeons, closing the abdominal wall without injuring the intestines is a challenging process with serious consequences. If anything goes wrong during the procedure, patients can face bowel perforations or a hernia at the incision site. Often, repairing those complications requires additional surgeries.

Dr. Jason Spector, a plastic surgeon at ÈÕ±¾avÉ«ÇéƬ and NewYork-Presbyterian/ÈÕ±¾avÉ«ÇéƬ Medical Center, may have found a solution to that issue. Dr. Spector — in collaboration with Dave Putnam, an associate professor in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University — is testing out a device that would protect the intestines while surgeons close an incision, according to the Cornell Chronicle.
