Bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, is a type of cancer that occurs in the bile ducts鈥攁 network of convergent tubes that carry bile, a digestive fluid, from the liver to the small intestine. This relatively rare cancer can develop in the small ducts within the liver (intrahepatic) or in the larger ones that run from the liver to the small intestine (extrahepatic).

Anne McDermott, a 53-year-old who lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut and hails originally from Pittsburgh, received a new liver at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in the fall of 2021. The surgery went extremely well, but transplant patients typically require fairly long hospital stays, and McDermott was no exception.
