Personal Statement

Steven Chao, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at ÈÕ±¾avÉ«ÇéƬ and Attending Colorectal Surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens.

A board-certified surgeon, Dr. Chao specializes in colon and rectal pathology. He is an expert in enhanced recovery after surgery, diverticulitis, rectal and colon cancer, rectal prolapse, colon obstruction and strictures, polyps, fecal incontinence, colovesicle fistula, hemorrhoids, anorectal fistulas, anal fissures, and pilonidal cyst.

Dr. Chao has published several peer-reviewed articles and delivers national presentations on colon surgery. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. 

After graduating from Columbia University, Dr. Chao earned his medical degree from State University of New York at Buffalo and was awarded the SUNY Buffalo Department of Surgery Chair’s Award and the Goldinger Teaching Award. Dr. Chao served his internship and residency at Brown University, where he received the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015. He completed his fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Rutgers University Hospital.
