About Surya V. Seshan, M.B., B.S.
It is a distinct honor for me to practice, teach and conduct research in Renal Pathology and serve as the Chief of the division, in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and ÈÕ±¾avÉ«ÇéƬ Medical College, New York.nbsp; My training and longtime association with Dr. Jacob Churg (one of the founding fathers of Renal Pathology) has been a rewarding experience.nbsp; Renal Pathology, as practiced in the academic setting, is a unique opportunity, where a significant depth of knowledge across the disciplines of Pathology, Nephrology, Rheumatology and Transplantation is required, while keeping up with new developments.nbsp; This is also a subspecialty dealing with medical diseases of the kidney, which often bridges the gap between basic and clinical sciences.nbsp; The wide variety of case material and consult cases received in our laboratory affords considerable expertise to become familiar, even some of the uncommonly occurring diseases in the kidney.nbsp; All kidney specimens are processed completely and efficiently by highly technical staff, using light, electron and immunofluorescence microscopy, to yield the most information.nbsp; In addition to diagnosis, prognositic information is obtained for appropriate therapy and management, which directly impacts on quality of patient care.
Dr. Surya Seshan is a nationally recognized expert in renal pathology. Dr. Seshan received medical training in her native India and completed pathology residency at New York Medical College. She trained in renal pathology with the legendary Dr. Jacob Churg, remained his associate for many years, and then became Director of Laboratories at Barnert Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey. Dr. Seshan joined our faculty in January, 2000 as Chief of Renal Pathology. Dr. Seshan has contributed numerous scientific articles to the literature and has co-authored three textbooks: The Kidney in Collagen Vascular Diseases, Classification and Atlas of Glomerular Diseases, and Renal Disease: Classification and Atlas of Tubulointerstitial and Vascular Diseases of the Kidney. Dr. Seshan directs a large renal pathology consultation practice, serving as the renal pathologist for several institutions in the tri-state region. The Renal Pathology Laboratory is equipped to handle all aspects of the renal biopsy from the moment it is obtained from the patient, including light microscopy, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. Dr. Seshan is available to provide personal consultation in all areas of renal pathology.
